BRIEFING: Are We Any Closer To Portable Health Information?

July 20th, 2007
by Chris Fleming

The Santa Barbara County Care Data Exchange was one of the most ambitious and publicized health data collection experiments in the country. But ten years after its inception, the project failed. At a time when the United States is seeking to expand the use of interoperable health information technology (IT) through regional data exchanges, what lessons can be learned from the ground-breaking Santa Barbara experiment, and how will they guide future health IT efforts?

David Brailer, Robert Miller, and Sam Karp will address those and other questions at a Washington, D.C., briefing to release an August 1 Health Affairs Web Exclusive package examining the Santa Barbara experiment. Publication of the package is supported by the California HealthCare Foundation.

When:   Wednesday, August 1, 2007; 9:30 – 11:00 am

Where:  National Press Club, First Amendment Lounge, Washington, D.C.

Who:    David Brailer, M.D., founder and chair of Health Evolution Partners; former National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, DHHS
