It is extremely dangerous to draw conclusions concerning health systems from their portrayals in films. Anecdotes are also filled with danger. Still, contrasting “Sicko” with “The Diving Bell and The Butterfly” reminds me of one summer when a small kidney stone caused me to visit an ER in a Dutch hospital. On discharge I asked to visit the billing office to arrange for payment, as no one had asked for any more information than my hotel address. I was directed to a room and saw two women sitting at computers. I explained why I was there and one woman gathered the information quickly. When finished, I asked if it only required two people to do all of the billing for the hospital. The other woman turned to me and said “I do the billing for the Dutch patients; she does it for all of the others.”
