Health Affairs Medicare Advantage Briefing
November 21st, 2008
Are Medicare enrollees—and U.S. taxpayers—getting their money’s worth from the private health plans that serve beneficiaries through the Medicare Advantage program? Just what is it Medicare Advantage plans are providing—and what’s this part of Medicare really supposed to accomplish? These questions have been hotly debated as long as Medicare Advantage and its precursor programs have existed. It’s likely the debate will intensify under the new administration and new Congress.
At a Health Affairs briefing on Monday, November 24, the journal will release a package of three articles on Medicare Advantage. Susan Dentzer, Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs, will moderate a panel that will discuss the past, present, and future of the program:
* Marsha Gold of Mathematica will present an overview of Medicare Advantage, discussing what it has—and has not—accomplished to date.
* Bryan Dowd of the University of Minnesota will survey the often conflicting visions of Medicare Advantage that have been advanced.
* Simon Stevens, the CEO of Ovations, UnitedHealth’s Medicare arm, will offer an industry view of the future of Medicare Advantage, and
* Senate Finance Committee staffers Liz Fowler and Kristin Bass (invited) will present the view from Capitol Hill.
The briefing and publication of the Health Affairs articles are supported by a grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies.
